According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006-07 Edition there will be numerous job openings resulting from the need to replace workers exiting the workforce. More opportunities will be available for those with extensive knowledge of software applications and office automation.

Administrative office positions in our society are becoming more technical and require the use of specific skills. To help students meet this demand, St. Philip’s College offers currriculums that prepare office personnel to assume responsibilities once reserved for managerial and professional staff. Students’ marketability is enhanced by emphasizing decision-making, problem solving, human relations, and business ethics skills.

Many secretaries and administrative assistants now provide training and orientation for new staff, conduct research on the Internet, and operate and troubleshoot new office technologies. In spite of these changes, however, the core responsibilities for secretaries and administrative assistants have remained much the same: Performing and coordinating an office’s administrative activities and storing, retrieving, and integrating information for dissemination to staff and clients.

Two year Associate Degrees, one year certificate programs, and one semester marketable skills achievement awards are available for those seeking entry-level workforce positions.

The program curriculum and activities provide, encourage, and support both leadership opportunities and professional development. The program is designed to prepare students to perform their duties with integrity and competence using various current technologies. The program also supports students preparing for careers in other fields. All majors are encouraged to become Certified Microsoft Office Specialists (MOS) in as many Microsoft Applications as possible. The Business Information Solutions Department maintains a MOS Testing Center for the convenience of the student.
