Course Despcription

Computer applications should be viewed as a tool for problem-solving and an aid to decision-making. To fully utilize the capabilities of Access 2003, students need to address the process or system side of how this technology is being used to add productivity to the workplace.

Students need to think about how data is organized, retrieved, and used by business. In this course you are expected to develop and execute strategies for solving information management problems using the applications in Access 2003.

Decision-making and problem-solving skills are integrated throughout the instruction and

text and the course is designed around the following performance objectives:
  • Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate school, work, or home situations and use Access to plan database structures for efficient information access, retrieval, and management.

  • Use and customize interface and computer operations using the operating system utilities.

  • Access the Internet and use the browser, search, and hyperlink capabilities of Web browsers.

  • Explain the nature and interrelationships of fields, records, and files.

  • Create, maintain, and edit database records, files, and tables.

  • Create related tables using primary field, foreign key, and one-to-many relationships.

  • Plan and create lists, forms, and tables for efficient data display and access.

  • Use advanced features to modify table design, modify forms, refine queries, add graphics, and imbed calculations.

  • Use advanced tools to create macros, repair databases, encrypt and decrypt a database.

  • Use different search strategies to query, retrieve, and sort data, including crosstab, parameter, action, and multiple criteria queries.

  • Create files and tables with data exports, including Web pages with hyperlinks.

  • Apply strategies for merging and integrating source data from different applications, using the commands for object linking and embedding files.
